Zagreb is the capital and the largest city in Croatia, with about 800,000 inhabitants. The center of Zagreb is divided intoUpper Town (Gornji Grad) Kaptol and Gradec hills and Lower Town (Donji Grad). The two areas are connected by a funicular. The city is rich in cultural and historical monuments, museums, theaters and concert halls, and it is also famous as university town which has one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1669.

The Naïf Art Museum

This Museum is considered as the first

Museum Naïve in the World. It preserves

the works of croatian naïve expression of

the twentieth century. The Museum is located

in the Palace Raffay in the Upper Town.

The Collection consists of 1,500 artworks:

paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints, mainly by croatians but also

by known foreign artists.

The Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum in Zagreb was founded in 1846 and found its space in the Palace Vranyczany-Hafner on the Zrinjevac Square.

Its valuable collection consists of about 400,000 objects. The collection presents the development of a number of prehistoric cultures from the Paleolithic period to the Iron Age. There's a section of ancient artifacts of the Greek and Roman origin found in Croatia and abroad. The Mediaval collection follows the chronological development from the period of the migrations of people until the late Middle Ages. The Egyptian collection is the only one of its kind in Southeast Europe. A remerkable finding is the Zagreb mummy wrapped with linen cloth with the longest Etruscan textfound so far. The Numismatic collection is one of the biggest and most important in Europe and in the World.

The Mimara Museum

The Mimara Museum is located in the center of the city, close to many other cultural and educational institutions. It offers view on the rich and varied art collection with works of the ancient world as well as of the European art from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century. A special unit consists of works of arts of the Near, Middle and Far East.

Museum of Broken Relationships

The Museum is the Winner of the Kenneth Hudson Award 2011 for the most innovative Museum in Europe.

The Museum of Broken Relationships grew from a travelling exhibition revolving around the concept of failed relationships and their ruins. Unlike ' destructive ' self-help instructions for recovery from failed loves, the Museum offers the opportunity to overcome an emotional collapse through creation: by contributing to the Museum's collection. Whatever the motivation for donating personal belongings - be it sheer exhibitionism, therapeutic relief, or simple curiosity - people embraced the idea of exposing their love legacy as a sort of ritual, a solemn ceremony. Our societies oblige us with our marriages, funerals, and even graduation farewells, but deny us any formal recognition of the demise of a relationship, despite its strong emotional effect. In the words of Roland Barthes in a lover ' s speech : " Every passion, ultimately, has its spectator ... (there is) no amorous oblation without a final theater " .

The Technical Museum

The Technical Museum, established in 1954 in Zagreb, follows in the tradition of the great science and technology museums of the world. Since 1958 it has occupied the protected wooden buildings designed by architect Marijan Haberle. The buildings were erected initially to house the Zagreb Fair. In addition to the several thousand items on permanent display, the Museum has some 10,000 items in storage. Among them are objects of everyday use which are typical of the industrial era of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Museum invests a lot of effort into popularising science and technology. It organises lectures on science and technology, presentations and shows, presentations and lectures in the Planetarium, workshops and events such as the Science Festival, and other activities.

The Cathedral of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Zagreb Cathedral is the most monumental and the most impressive Gothic-style sacral building southeast of the Alps. Its ground plan, with slender cross-ribbed arches within three polygonal apses with narrow windows, resembles French architectural pattern (ex. the one in Troyes); the details of its subsequently added naves (of equal height) correspond to the building patterns of modern German architecture; imaginative sculptures, on the other hand, reflect influence of Czech schools. All this indicates not only early introducation of Gothic style to Croatia's north and internationalization of art, but also the importance of Zagreb Bishopric and the status and power of its bishops in those days. From the very beginning, the cathedral was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin mary, i.e. to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Feast of the Assumption). Although Hungarian King St. Stephen is always mentioned as the primary patron-saint, he is actually the second one.

Il Museo d' Arte Naïf Questo Museo è considerato il primo Museo d'arte naïf al mondo. Nel Museo vengono custodite le opere di espressione naíf croata del Novecento. Il Museo si trova nel Palazzo settecentesco Raffay nella Città alta. La collezione è composta da 1.500 opere d'arte - quadri, sculture, disegni e grafiche, prevalentemente di artisti croati ma anche di noti artisti stranieri.

Il Museo Archeologico

II Museo archeologico di Zagabria è stato fondato nel 1846 ed ha trovato la sua sistemazione nel palazzo storico Vranyczany-Hafner affacciato sulla piazza Zrinjevac.
La sua preziosa collezione museale è composta da circa 400.000 oggetti sistemati nelle relative sezioni. La collezione preistorica presenta lo sviluppo di numerose culture a partire dal periodo paleolitico fino all'età del ferro. Nella sezione sull'antichità sono presentati i reperti di provenienza greca e quelli romani rinvenuti in Croazia o all'estero. La collezione medievale segue lo sviluppo cronologico a partire dal periodo delle migrazioni dei popoli fino al tardo Medioevo. La collezione egiziana è l'unica nel suo genere nel sudest europeo. Un reperto eccezionale è la Mummia di Zagabria fasciata con il telo di lino con il più lungo testo etrusco finora trovato. La collezione numismatica è una tra le più grandi è le più importanti in Europa e nel mondo.

Il Museo Mimara è situato nel centro città, in prossimità di altre istituzioni culturali ed educative. Offre una ricca e varia collezione d' arte con lavori del mondo antico e dell' arte Europea dal Primo Medio Evo al 20' esimo secolo. Una sezione speciale consiste nelle opere d' arte del Vicino, Medio e Lontano Oriente.
